2 Strokes Are Losing Because
4 strokes are linear in power delivery and have more low-end torque. They are therefore easier for the non-expert to ride in a variety of conditions.
I don't buy into the emissions excuse. The US has lagged behind the rest of the world in terms of the environment for years. We do leave the greatest carbon print per capita than the rest of the globe.
It seems like 4 strokes appeal to a larger audience (aka more sales) and are more expensive to maintain (aka more parts and service), so it's about profitability probably.
