450 or a 300EXC?

I recently bought a new bike, I had been in the market for some time and looked at many different possibilities. The dilemma I was facing was that I have grown up riding two-strokes and love the feel, but now I have married into a family that ride quads. Puttering along trails with them on any bike is tiring enough (if you think going fast takes a lot out of you try going slow). I wanted to get a 450 - any make would have been okay until I rode a KTM 300.

The 300 blew any desires for a four-stroke out of my mind, it was like the difference between driving a truck and a sports car. The 300 I bought is a 05 KTM 300 EXC and it feels great on the trails, delivers mountains of power, and best of all doesn't load up puttering at low speeds. The suggested mixture ratio is 60:1 I run 50:1 and it burns clean. I give this bike a ten and say bring back the two-strokes.

I totally agree with that choice.

After riding a yzf400 a crf450 and a ktm exc 525 I am back to two-stroke also with a 2005 exc 300. I discover back the same sensation I had in early times when I was young (The two-stroke era).

Dirt riding is fun again. The four-strokes were to me at the first time ok (easy riding: seems like easy). But than the problems started. Cornering is horrible on a four-stroke! Engine brake is also horrible! Trail riding is also horrible. It stalls and it takes me some time to recognize that the problems caused not by me but it was the four-stroke!

The exc 300 rides like a dream. Everybody who rides one wants one.

Just wanted to reply to your post as I am in the market for a new bike. I've been riding an '08 WR 250 for 2yrs now and I feel it's time for an upgrade. To me... a dog of a four-stroke can't even compare to the snap, smell and scream that a two-stroke delivers. I have been drooling over the KTM two-strokes for a while now and it's only a matter of time until I make the switch.

It's extremely satisfying to read what others have to say about these machines. Thanks for the validation and happy trails.
