Tips On Buying The Right Dirt Bike Gear
So you've got the bike, now you need the dirt bike gear to go with it. For this you're going to need some knowledge on what to look for, and some coin. No one said this was a cheap sport, and that's because it isn't!
It's super important you invest the money to protect yourself with the proper clothing, helmet e.t.c. I remember when I had my first motocross bike at 14, I used to ride around in a cheap, crappy helmet, t-shirt, jeans and gumboots! (All class I know.) I'm so lucky I never had a bad accident back in those days. Don't rely on luck because there are plenty of crippled people around who regret not having better protective gear on when they came off their bike.
Accidents can happen when traveling at high and low speeds, riding through forests, cornering and especially when jumping. And sometimes it's not even your fault but the guy who comes plowing into you from the side. And when the shite hits the fan you need to be wearing high quality dirt bike riding gear to prevent yourself from serious injury or even death.
Cutting corners by buying a second hand helmet or using tired old hand-me-down motocross boots can result in far more pain and grief than the extra couple of hundred bucks it would've cost to buy new ones or upgrade to a superior product. So think wisely when making your next purchase as your riding days will be limited if you don't look after yourself.
Did You Know..
Back in the early days of motocross things were a lot different. The sport was dominated by Europeans as it didn't really kick off in America until the late 1960's. The bikes were vastly different with considerably less suspension travel as they were still in the process of morphing from tweaked up road bikes to full on off-road dirt bikes. And the motocross gear seemed to be a cross between horse riding clothing and military gear.. oh how far we've come!
One of the greatest motocross riders of the 1960's was Swedish born Torsten Hallman, who cleaned up the 250cc Motocross World Championships 4 times. He's the guy leading the charge against Joel Robert in the photo here.. Torsten also lead the way in motocross gear design when he began selling MX clothing after his racing career. You might recognize his brainchild now as THOR MX - Torsten Hallman Original Racewear.
You can find some great deals on dirt bike apparel online. Often you can find the same products that you can get at your local shop for a lot cheaper if you take the time to look around. I've purchased a few things online and have had it delivered all the way from the U.S to little ol' N.Z with no problems. So whether you're after a lid for ya noggin, some new graphics for your steed, or pretty much any
motocross equipment, look around and compare prices first. Keep in mind it's always good to support your local bike shop if you can.
If you don't already know, a great place to begin looking for dirt bike gear is at Motorcycle Superstore. These guys are well known by most and have been delivering the goods for a while.
