Expensive Four Strokes Weed Out The Riff-raff
by Kurt Eibell
Imagine what motocross or enduro would look like if any old Joe Schmoe could spend a couple months salary and buy a race winning bike?? Think of the gypsies, hangers-on, and dirty hippies that would invade the pits and turn order and professionalism into an orgy of debauchery and sin.
We need to keep the cost of racing out of reach of the common man, thus maintaining more riding area for us, the privileged. What's the old adage? "If you have to ask how much it cost, you can't afford it."
Just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about, let me give you an example. Recently I rebuilt a 2006 Honda CRF250 and a 1980 Can-Am 400. Parts were $1500 for the Honda and $750 for the Can-Am. The Honda parts had to be custom ordered from Japan while the Can-Am parts were on the shelf at the California dealer. The Can-Am is by far a better and faster motorcycle but thankfully, the AMA has legislated to prevent it from racing in AMA Pro Racing (anymore).
Now do we really want the kind of people around us that could spend $1000 on a motorcycle, $750 for a complete bottom and top end rebuild? My gawd, what if they WON!?!
No, it is just better to pay more to ensure these unwashed masses stay on the other side of the fence.
Kurt.- Whoa Kurt. Those are bold statements. So we should keep it away from the hands of the common man huh? I don't know what neck of the woods you hang in but I don't believe we'd have any problems over here if the cost of riding was dramatically lowered.
Just because the masses could afford to ride and race dirt bikes I'm pretty sure they wouldn't. It's not everyones cup of tea so to speak.
Anyway, thanks for sharing. Should raise a few hairs..
