First Bike - 2001 Yamaha YZ426F

T-Holt's First Bike 01 YZ426F

I purchased this bike from a guy who had no mechanical knowledge. I heard about it through another friend. When we went to look at it the previous owner said all it needed was a new spark plug. I loaded it up brought it home changed the plug but it would not start. There was a couple of cosmetic problems but nothing that would effect the performance. So I called him to discuss price. I ended up paying $800.00 and the deal included helmet, goggles, gloves, jersey, pants and chest protector. I cleaned out the carb, added new gas and she fired up. Ran rough for a little but learned how to adjust the fuel knob, rode her for a while and she started purring. I finally learned the sequence to get this big bore running and she fires right up every time.

Since this is my first bike I have ever owned and ridden I do not have anything to compare it to but it seems to have plenty of power and I think I got a pretty good deal. What do you guys think?

Great Bike And At A Great Price
by: mark,

Well I think you bought yourself a great bike for the amount that you paid for it. I've had the 426f from brand new off the show room floor after my Honda CR 5oo was stolen out of the old mans shed (but it was returned thankfully after a bit of convincing). I still enjoy riding both bikes but I still come back from riding the yzf426 with white knuckles. So every time we go riding I always take the two with me but I enjoy riding the yzf the most... it's a 4 STROKE THING I'm sure.

They're Bad Ass
by: Ryan426

I too have an '01 426 and they're like bullet proof. Keep up with oil and air filter changes and she'll last a long time. Also it wouldn't hurt to have your valves checked. I doubt that the old owner ever did.

1st Of The Four Strokes
by: Anonymous

Yeah, you made a decent deal, the 426 was a fast bike, and was one of the first bikes that opened up the four stroke revolution.

Watch out for over revving it, as the 426 was known for bending valves and ruining the top end in short order.

In my opinion your first bike should have been one not as complicated as the YZ426. Adjusting the valves can make grown men cry. And god help you if you need to split the cases.

Good luck!

Good Buy

You definitely got a good deal and you will never lack power. If this is your first bike it could be your last. Just take care of it, keep up the maintenance and ride like the wind. Thumbs up!
