Okuku Valley - North Canterbury

From Rangiora, head towards and through Loburn, and follow road through to Okuku pass. You can part just after the narrow wooden bridge and ride over the pass, or drive over. Heaps of open and hilly terrain, one of the best places in NZ to ride.

- That looks amazing George. The only time I've spent in the snow down South is while snowboarding. I love that backdrop and spectacular scenerey that is unique to good 'ol New Zealand.

Questions: How do your bikes handle the snow and cold temperatures? Do you have to make any modifications to them? I imagine you'd benefit from some butty 'sand/mud' tires to get through the deep stuff.

Cheers for the pics - they're impressive.

Access By Permission

Hi, I just found this interesting site.

The land just East of those areas mentioned covering 'The Brothers' at the bottom of Lees Pass to 'Mc Donald Downs' is controlled by the Farmer at Mc Donald Downs and has access fees with permission required. I think the land changes hands at the Okuku River so I'm not sure about the Mt Gordon area where the photos are.

I do know there has been some dirt bike riders upsetting the Farmers in the area in recent years so be careful where you go and what you do there. Stay on the established tracks, don't cut new trails or ride up random hillsides.

The main road through the area Okuku Pass/Lees Pass is a public road also through working farmland and as such bikes need to be registered and warranted for on road use for that bit.

There are also the occasional organized trail rides run in the area such as the one coming on the 9th June 2013 run by the Cody Riders advertised on the 'myrides' website.

Okuku Pass is a public road from Whiterock through to Lees Valley and then Ashley Gorge bringing you out at the back of Oxford. The land either side of this road is private.

Sounds awesome George, is it private property or not? How to get access if it is?

As you can see in one of the photos, we didn't make it all the way. Got real deep. We ride trail bikes, and have just bought a 2006 WR450F which is fantastic for this kind of riding. We run intermediate knobblies when riding here, as in winter it gets pretty slippery and muddy. The snow is a fair way up.

Round trip with a lot of playing was nearly 6 hours and a full tank of gas. Photos of snow are taken on Pancake Range, and deep snow was at Mt Gordon.

Highly recommend anyone coming here, but please avoid around lambing season.

- Bahhhhhh!
