Where To Ride in New Zealand - Motocross Tracks, Parks & Clubs

If you want to know where to ride in New Zealand, or you already know of some tracks or bike parks that you can share with everyone, then you've landed on the right page.

Good ol' New Zealand - Land of the long white cloud and rolling pastures... and yes, full of sheep.

With so many farms it's little wonder we have an ever-growing interest in motocross and trail riding. What else would all our boys do to relieve that tension built up from squeezing cows tits all day?

Having a large coastline, we also have plenty of sand dunes to ride on, mostly for free... at the present. But who knows down the track (excuse the pun). With more and more people becoming interested in the sport, and more people moving out into the rural areas to live, there is beginning to be a conflict of interests in some areas.

Ol' Square-Eyed Richard (Dick), new to the countryside wants piece and quiet in his newly-found slice of paradise. He certainly doesn't like those 'noisy motorbikes'!

So lap up the free riding areas while you can my friends. But let's also let fellow dirt bikers know where to ride in N.Z using this directory.

AWAKAPONGA MX TRACK - BAY OF PLENTY MOTORCYCLE CLUB

THE SANDPIT
Where: Woodhill Forest, West Auckland - Follow Rimmers Rd off of SH 16. It's well sign posted from there. Long gravel road's so don't wash your ute before-hand!
Track Type: Sand trails through the forest

THUNDER VALLEY BIKE PARK
Location: SHW 22, about 30 mins south west of Tuakau
Track Type: Motocross track, steep hills, swamps and bush.. not for beginners. Avoid it when wet!

MANAWATU-ORION MOTORCYCLE CLUB
Track/Club Type: Various tracks used. Motorcycle events include motocross, road racing , trials, trail rides, miniature road race, enduro, super motard and ATV

THE BOMBING RANGE - KAIPARA, AUCKLAND
Track Type: Wide open sand dunes with big bowls and natural jumps
Location: Roughly 30km North from Muriwai Beach. Drive up the beach from Muriwai. I think the access point from Rimmers Rd is now blocked. You'll need to take a 4wd up with plenty of gas on low tide. You must time the tides right or you will get stuck. Best not to go by yourself, if you get injured you're stuck in the middle of no-where! There is no signage directing you to the actual range so it is possible to drive right past the entry which is in the dunes on the right hand side driving up. It would pay to follow someone who knows where to go. Watch out for deer and angry hunters in the forest!

Where: Various trails, mainly in Woodhill, West Auckland
What: Greg Powers runs a great family-friendly, off-road motorcycle club. Meets and trail rides/races are organized throughout the season. A great place for beginners and the experienced alike.

Type: Approx 2.5km long of fast paced track - hard pack with big jumps. Seperate mini's and pitbike track
